Talk about rivalries. Talk about sportsmanship. Talk about competitiveness. Talk about meeting the same team again and again for the nth time. Before the game on 4/9/2025 takes off between the New York Rangers and the Philadelphia Flyers , let’s take a brief look at the historical rivalry between the New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers since the nineteen-hundreds.

But before we go even further, let’s check their statistics for the 2024-2025 NHL season. The stats would remind you of how far these two rivals have come! New York Rangers have had 36 wins, 32 losses, and 7 overtime losses in the 2024-2025 NHL season. The Rangers currently stand tall as 4th in the Metropolitan Division. On the other side of the rink are the Philadelphia Flyers, who have had 31 wins, 36 losses, and 9 overtime losses in the 2024-2025 NHL season. The Flyers rank 8th in the Metropolitan Division.

The rivalry between the New York Rangers and the Philadelphia Flyers has been going on since the 1970s

Talk about history never failing to repeat itself! And you’ll get this rivalry duo - New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers. It’s not just any regular game rivalry, it’s the playoffs rivalry that holds more weightage than anything else.

In the 1970s

  • In 1974, The Philadelphia Flyers won against the New York Rangers in the semi-finals and went on to win their first Stanley Cup Championship.

  • In 1979, the New York Rangers won against the Philadelphia Flyers in the quarterfinals of five games. The Rangers reached the Stanley Cup Finals but were defeated by the Montreal Canadiens.

In the 1980s

  • In 1987, The Philadelphia Flyers and the New York Rangers met for several games, thereby leading the Flyers into the Stanley Cup Finals. Unfortunately, the Flyers were defeated by the Edmonton Oilers in the Stanley Cup Championship.

In the 1990s

  • In 1995 and 1997, the New York Rangers and the Philadelphia Flyers met for the playoffs, and both of the playoffs were won by the Flyers.

In the 2000s

  • The early 2000s were marked by moments of peace between the two historical rivals - the New York Rangers and the Philadelphia Flyers. Reason? The game ended halfway as a tie with 2-2 scores for both the Rangers and Flyers. Again, why? Because right when their third period was going to begin, then President George W. Bush gave a speech. The teams shook hands with each other and did not play in their third period. Thereby leaving a tie.

  • The late 2000s, particularly, 2009-2010 saw the rivalry emerge as the phoenix. This time around, the teams met for a playoff spot, where the Philadelphia Flyers defeated the New York Rangers. The Flyers went straight into the Stanley Cup Finals where they were defeated by the Chicago Blackhawks.
