NEW DELHI: Umar Saifi, the guide of differently-abled athlete Simran Sharma who won gold and silver in sprint competitions at the recently-concluded World Para Athletics Championships here, has been provisionally suspended by the National Anti-Doping Agency (Nada) for testing positive for the banned substance Drostanolone.

Saifi was tested by Nada’s dope control officers at the Delhi Open State Championships – an able-bodied event – in Aug this year, ahead of the World para athletics meet. In the Delhi Open, Umar won gold in the 200m.

As a result of Saifi’s doping failure, Simran’s twin medals won at the World para meet are likely to be revoked, and her results will be disqualified. Simran, with guide Saifi, had successfully defended her women’s 100m T12 title, clocking a personal best time of 11.95s. She then claimed silver in the 200m T12 final with an Asian record timing of 24.46s for a historic double.
“Simran is likely to be stripped of her medals pending hearing into the matter. Her results would be declared null and void. The anti-doping rules apply to both athletes and athlete support personnel (in this case Saifi) and everyone has a role in protecting clean sport. It was Simran and her coaches’ responsibility to ensure that Saifi was clean and not taking any prohibited substance,” a Nada official said.
The 20-year-old from Uttar Pradesh’s Muradnagar had long been associated with Simran as her guide. Drostanolone helps the body increase muscle mass and strength while also reducing fat.
According to the International Paralympic Committee’s (IPC) anti-doping rules, an athlete’s medal can be at risk if his or her support staff is found guilty of a doping violation, depending on the specifics of the case. The IPC’s rules hold athletes and their support staff to account for protecting clean sport, with consequences for both. The IPC applies the principle of “strict liability”, which means athletes are equally responsible for any prohibited substances found in their or support personnel system, regardless of intent.
