Melinda Gates , ex-wife of Microsoft founder Bill Gates has responded to criticism from top tech leaders for her philanthropic work. Melinda appeared on the Scott Galloway’s podcast recently where she spoke about how Amazon founder Jeff Bezos ’ former wife, MacKenzie Scott and Tesla CEO Elon Musk have questioned her charitable work. During the podcast, she said “I’m in the arena doing the work,” stating she is more focused on making a meaningful impact rather than engaging in debates. Melinda co-founded the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation with her ex-husband, Bill Gates. The foundation is one of the largest private charitable organizations in the world and focuses on global health, education, gender equality, and poverty reduction.
After getting divorced, Melinda continued her philanthropic work, focusing more on issues affecting women and girls globally. In 2022, she announced that she would donate $1 billion over ten years through her investment and incubation company, Pivotal Ventures, to support women’s rights, reproductive health, and leadership.
Recently, Melinda launched a $250 million “Action for Women’s Health” fund focused on improving women’s mental and physical health.
When Elon Musk criticised French Melinda Gates
In June last year, Musk said that French Gates’ political activities could be “the downfall of western civilization”. The Tesla CEO was replying to a post by conservative influencer Ashley St. Clair who then wrote
“I am once again asking for the scorned billionaire wife to Democrat activist pipeline to be studied.
Melinda Gates is about to spend so much divorce money on getting Joe Biden elected”.
To this, Musk replied “Might be the downfall of western civilization”.
In a related news, Melinda Gates recently opened about her divorce with Bill Gates. During an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the 60-year-old philanthropist explained that she had to end their 27-year-long marriage due to lack of ‘honesty’. During the interview, she said that to have a “trusted relationship, which is what I want in marriage”, “both partners have to be honest with one other”.
“And if you can’t, you can’t have intimacy and you can’t have trust. And so, in the end, I had to go,” she added.
