Send Push
Microsoft has warned Windows users about a problem in a recent version of the Classic Outlook app. The company has informed that this issue can cause high CPU usage. The company has warned that typing in the affected Outlook version may lead to CPU usage spiking by as much as 50%. Microsoft has recommended that users switch to the Microsoft 365 Apps update channel as a temporary solution.

In a blog post, the company wrote: “When you write an email in classic Outlook for Windows, you may notice the CPU spikes up to 30 to 50% at some times and increases the power consumption. You can observe this if Task Manager is open while you type. This issue can occur after updating to Version 2406 Build 17726.20126+ on the Current Channel, the Monthly Enterprise Channel, or the Insider channels. The Outlook Team is investigating this issue. We will update this topic when there are any status updates.”

“To work around the issue, you can switch to the Semi-Annual Channel, where the issue has not been observed. You can switch to Semi Annual Channel using one of these methods,” Microsoft added, suggesting a temporary workaround.

How is this Outlook issue affecting users

According to a report by Digital Trends, this Outlook issue is causing high CPU usage for some Windows users when composing emails. Affected users have reported CPU usage increases between 20% and 50%, which can also lead to higher power consumption on their devices.

The report highlights that even high-end systems are not immune to this issue, with some users using Intel Core i9-14900HX processors complaining that CPU temperatures reach as high as 95 degrees Celsius with just a ‘New Message’ window open. These problems have reportedly been occurring since as far back as November 2024.

Microsoft is expected to roll out a permanent solution for this issue, as overheated CPUs can cause issues such as crashes and freezes.
