TikTok has started fresh round of layoffs affecting employees in multiple regions. The layoffs are said to be part of a broader effort to streamline its global operations and focus more on core business priorities. As reported by the Wall Street Journal, internal sources the layoffs will impact operations in South and Southeast Asia. The company notified some employees last week and others will soon receive formal communication.

TikTok layoffs : What the company has said

TikTok mentioned that the layoffs are part of a strategic realignment and is not a cost-cutting measure. The company is said to be concentrating overlapping roles and focus efforts in AI-driven content discovery, e-commerce integration, and creator monetization tools—areas it sees as critical for future growth.

Speaking about the TikTok layoffs, the company spokesperson told WSJ, “We are continuing a reorganisation that we started last year to strengthen our global operating model for trust and safety.”

What it means for employees
As per the report, the affected employees will get severance packages and transition support. Internally, the mood is described as “tense but not panicked,” with many teams bracing for further changes.

Global context
The TikTok layoffs come at a time when regulatory scrutiny is increasing and there’s also competitive pressure. In the U.S., TikTok continues to face threats of a potential ban or forced divestiture due to national security concerns. Meanwhile, rivals like YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels are aggressively expanding their creator ecosystems.

TikTok’s parent company ByteDance has also been tightening operations across its portfolio, including scaling back certain experimental projects and consolidating teams across its apps.
