GUWAHATI: An influential Meitei organisation has appealed to PM Modi to replace Manipur CM Biren Singh , citing his "inability to restore normalcy " after 17 months of ethnic violence in the state.
"We hope that with a new leader at the helm, peace and normalcy can be reinstated in Manipur," World Meetei Council said Monday in a petition submitted to PMO.
The council criticised CM, who belongs to Meitei community, for not taking responsibility for the unrest that erupted on May 3 last year.
"In a democratic framework, accountability lies with the head of government for consequences of their leadership. A failure to govern effectively should prompt a resignation to allow for a new government under new leadership," the council said, adding, "People have become refugees in their own homeland. Do they not deserve a government that is accountable and responsible?"
