RAJKOT/JAMNAGAR: A 35-year-old physically challenged man was killed after being thrown from a moving train near Jamnagar in Gujarat early Wednesday, moments after objecting to two men occupying a coach reserved for disabled passengers.
Jamnagar residents Haji Ayyub Kachhadia and Saddam Qasam were arrested Thursday in connection with the killing. Police said both men have prior criminal records involving prohibition and other offences.
Hitesh Mistry, a labourer from Vadodara, was returning home from Porbandar aboard Saurashtra Express when he was assaulted and pushed off the train between Porbandar and Jamnagar, according to railway police.
Inspector Bharti Vegda said Mistry and his friend Paaul Makwana — also disabled — were traveling in a coach reserved for differently abled passengers. “The accused duo, who were headed to Rajkot, entered the special coach. When Mistry objected, an altercation broke out. They beat him and pushed him off the train before it reached Hapa station,” Vegda said.
Makwana got down at Jamnagar station seeking help but failed to find police before the train moved again. He boarded another compartment and returned to the special coach at Hapa station, where he found Mistry and the two men missing. He alerted railway police and filed a complaint. Mistry’s body was found later that morning.
