ISLAMABAD: Pakistan vowed on Wednesday it would give a befitting response to India in case of aggression, warning that any attempt to divert its water share or launch military action would be met with decisive force.
Rejecting India’s accusations linking Pakistan to the April 22 Pahalgam attack that killed 26 civilians, Pakistani officials slammed what they claimed was India’s “propaganda” and “illegal” suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), presenting “evidence” of New Delhi’s “choreographed” narrative.
Addressing media at the foreign affairs ministry in Islamabad, foreign minister Ishaq Dar, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) D-G Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, and foreign office spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan accused India of stoking regional instability with “provocative lies”.
Dar condemned terrorism, citing the Quran: “Killing one is like killing humanity.” Offering condolences for Pahalgam, he underscored Pakistan’s sacrifices against terrorism, unlike what he alleged was India’s “terror sponsorship”. Dar called India’s IWT suspension “unilateral and illegal”, warning, “Diverting our water is an act of war” according to the National Security Committee, Pakistan’s principal forum mandated for considering national security and foreign policy matters.
He criticised India’s diplomatic moves — expelling diplomats, sealing borders — as “reckless”, and affirmed Pakistan’s restraint while reserving its UN Charter self-defence rights. Dar disclosed a letter sent on Wednesday to the UN Security Council demanding India’s accountability for breaching international law.
Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif alleged India’s claims were a “premeditated farce”. Using slides and what he claimed was intercepted audio, he alleged Indian operatives staged the Pahalgam attack for political gain. “They predict, execute, then glorify attacks,” Sharif said, likening it to the 2019 Pulwama playbook. “Kashmir is their external problem, but they internalise it. Terrorism is their internal failure, yet they blame Pakistan.” Sharif noted the attack’s location ruled out Pakistan’s involvement, demanding a neutral probe. “Ten days, no evidence from India,” he remarked. Warning of military readiness, he declared, “We are ready. Don’t test us. Our forces will crush any misadventure.”
Sharif cited fresh intelligence of India planning airstrikes, vowing a “disproportionate response.”
FO spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan tried to expose “flaws” in India’s response, questioning the hasty FIR implicating Pakistan. “Such speed screams premeditation,” he claimed, urging an independent investigation.
The press conference reflected Pakistan’s bid to debunk India’s narrative amid escalating tensions. The Pahalgam attack, claimed by The Resistance Front, has reignited Kashmir disputes, with India accusing Pakistan of being responsible, a charge Islamabad denies.
