NEW DELHI: AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi will kickstart his party’s Bihar Assembly election campaign with a four-day “Seemanchal Nyay Yatra” from September 24 to 27 in the Seemanchal region of the state.
According to a release from AIMIM on Tuesday, the Yatra will begin from Kishanganj and cover various Assembly constituencies in the region through roadshows and corner meetings.
The party said that the initiative is aimed at uniting people for the development of Seemanchal and delivering justice to the backward region.
Owaisi has often highlighted the underdevelopment of Seemanchal, and in the past, he introduced a private member’s bill in the Lok Sabha seeking the creation of a ‘Seemanchal Region Development Council’ under Article 371 of the Constitution.
Speaking to reporters about the Yatra, Owaisi said, “It is wrong to say that election campaigning is starting now. The election campaign has already begun, and under the leadership of our Akhtarul Iman, work has been ongoing. Now, in Seemanchal, we have a four-day visit planned. In various constituencies, we will go and meet the public and hold public meetings.”
The AIMIM chief also targeted the BJP over caste politics while commenting on the Uttar Pradesh government’s recent order to remove caste references from police records. “What will you say on the caste-based politics which BJP does? They should look into the caste-based rallies,” he said.
In the 2020 Bihar Assembly elections, AIMIM contested 20 seats and won five, all from the Seemanchal region. For the upcoming 2025 polls, the party is expected to contest more constituencies, with indications that several influential leaders and social workers are keen to join AIMIM and fight elections on its ticket, the release added.
Seemanchal refers to the eastern districts of Bihar, including Kishanganj, Purnea, Araria and Katihar. According to the Election Commission (EC), the dates for the Bihar polls, which are likely to be conducted in two phases, are expected to be announced in the first week of October.
