This is the right way to prevent milk from spoiling in summer

Send Push
The rising temperature often leads to faster food and milk spoilage during the season. One of the major reasons why milk spoils faster in summers is due to the heat, which further accelerates bacterial growth. However, here are a few simple tips that you can use to keep your milk fresh for longer, reducing waste and maintaining its nutritional value.

Keep milk at the proper temperature
Keep milk in the refrigerator at or below 4°C (39°F) at all times. Never leave milk at room temperature, particularly during heat. Bacteria grow very fast. If you do not have a refrigerator, keep milk in an insulated bag with ice packs to maintain coolness.

Close the lid tightly

Exposure to air enables bacteria to penetrate the milk container, accelerating spoilage. Always keep the lid tightly closed after use to avoid contamination and to reduce the exposure of the milk to air, which can also make it smell like other foods.

Use clean utensils
When pouring milk, never pour with dirty, wet spoons. Dirty spoons contain germs that will transfer bacteria to the milk upon pouring, which makes the milk spoil faster. Refrain from dipping hands or dirty items directly into the milk container.

Store milk in the refrigerator
Store milk on the middle or bottom shelf of the refrigerator, where temperatures remain more consistent. Do not store it in the door, as the temperature changes with frequent opening and closing, which can hasten spoilage.

Add a pinch of baking soda
Adding a small pinch of baking soda can help neutralize the acidity that leads to souring. This works best for raw or fresh milk and can extend its freshness slightly. However, this doesn’t replace proper refrigeration.

Use airtight containers
Transfer milk to clean, airtight glass containers if you’ve opened the original packaging. Glass doesn’t leach chemicals like some plastics and helps maintain the milk’s freshness longer.

Check the date and smell regularly
Always check the expiration date before purchasing milk. Use it within 3–4 days after opening for maximum freshness. In the event of sour odor or curdling in milk, throw it away immediately.
