Russia on Thursday formally recognised the Taliban government in Afghanistan , marking a significant shift in Moscow's diplomatic stance as it aims to strengthen ties with Kabul.
Zamir Kabulov , Russia’s special envoy to Afghanistan, confirmed the move in an interview with state-run Ria Novosti, stating that the Kremlin has now recognised the Taliban regime, which calls itself the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan .
Russia's foreign ministry also confirmed the decision to TASS news agency, signalling a new phase of engagement with Afghanistan’s leadership, nearly three years after the Taliban returned to power.
