Mangaluru: Uncertainty continues over UG classes despite schools set to reopen from May 29

Mangaluru: While schools across Karnataka are scheduled to reopen on May 29, uncertainty continues to loom over the commencement of undergraduate (UG) classes for the new academic year. Despite the upcoming announcement of II PUC results, students seeking admission to degree courses may once again have to wait at least three months before classes begin.

Traditionally, II PUC results are declared in April or May, followed by the start of college classes in June. However, this academic rhythm has been disrupted since the COVID-19 pandemic, and the delays appear to be persisting this year as well. The lack of a standardized academic calendar across universities has caused significant distress to students and parents.

UG Classes Likely to Begin in August Again

Currently, Mangalore University is conducting 2nd, 4th, and 6th semester classes, which are set to conclude by June 2. Final exams for these students will take place through the second half of June, followed by evaluation and results in July. As a result, the new academic year for UG students is likely to begin only in August.

In fact, degree classes under Mangalore University began on August 12 last year and on August 23 the year before. Other universities in the state are reportedly further behind in their schedules.

Concerns Over Drop in UG Admissions

“Since classes don’t begin immediately after the PUC results, students often explore alternate options such as vocational training or short-term jobs. This leads to a decline in interest towards degree courses, risking a drop in UG enrollment,” said a college principal.

Dr. Kavitha, Regional Joint Director of the Department of Collegiate Education, told Udayavani, “Instructions have already been issued to all government colleges to begin preparations for UG admissions. Efforts are being made to streamline and increase enrollment across institutions. The government is also planning measures to unify the academic calendar.”

Admissions Inquiries Already Underway

Even before the results are announced, many students have begun visiting colleges in the city along with their parents to inquire about UG admissions. A surge in interest is expected once the II PUC results are out. However, they may still have to wait until August to begin classes.

Guest Lecturer Appointments Need to Be Expedited

Meanwhile, the appointment of guest lecturers in government colleges is likely to pose another challenge. These appointments typically occur only after the academic session officially begins in each university. Hence, early-starting universities like Mangalore University may face a shortage of faculty.

Stakeholders have urged the government to grant early approvals and begin the recruitment process immediately so that guest lecturers are in place by the time classes commence.

According to Prof. Raju Mogaveera, Registrar (Administration), Mangalore University, “The academic calendar is slowly returning to normalcy after years of disruption due to COVID-19. Instructions from the Department of Collegiate Education on the academic schedule are expected soon. Preparations for admissions will begin immediately after II PUC results are announced, and classes for freshers will start soon after the current batch finishes their exams and results are published.”
